The Different Kinds of Plumbers

Plumbing can be considered a general area of trade, as it is possible—even likely—to specialise within the industry. Just like doctors and lawyers can have their own specialties (doctors can become surgeons or cardiologists, and lawyers can be criminal defence attorneys or specialise in divorce cases), plumbers can focus on one aspect of the plumbing trade and become an expert in one particular field.

Specialisation can be achieved through a two-step process. First, people who want to be plumbers must take plumbing courses

and the particular subjects taken will then dictate as to what kind of plumber they will eventually become. After taking the appropriate plumbing courses, they can then serve as new plumbers and work for companies who are tight now desperate  to fill up their ranks, or become associates of experienced and-self-employed plumbers who specialise in home repair jobs. Taking courses and then becoming employed in a company right away is a vast improvement over traditional plumbing education, which relied almost totally on the apprenticeship granted by a few willing self-employed plumbers.

Repair and Service Plumbers
This is the type of plumbers that most people often encounter and are most familiar with. These are the people we despair to find during a plumbing emergency, such as when a flooding occurs within our homes. They are the ones we call for such inconveniences as when our toilets no longer work or when faucets or showers fail. They can also save us money in water bills by fixing existing drips in pipes and faucets.

The most important plumbing courses in order to become a repair and service plumber are the diagnostic courses that train would-be plumbers about seeing possible problems even with minor symptoms. The plumbing within our homes may be considered systems, and even minor annoyances such as dripping faucets may indicate a problem within the entire system that can be more expensive to fix if more time elapses. This is similar to medical cases when doctors check out mild chest pains and sees something majorly wrong with the heart. Simple problems can be easily fixed if symptoms are the only problems; but expert repair plumbers know enough about the plumbing system to recommend corrective repair that may allow homeowners to avoid more expensive replacements later on.

Commercial Plumbers

This type of plumber is often employed by construction or engineering firms, as they assist in the construction of commercial buildings. There are many kinds of commercial building and each has its own plumbing needs: from office buildings to banks to shopping malls.

The education of this type of plumber must ensure that the new graduate knows how to read blueprints for each type of commercial building. The plumber must also know about the plumbing needs of each type of commercial building, and then be able to plan and install the appropriate system.

Residential Construction Plumbers

This type of plumber works in the construction of houses. They have to know how to read residential blueprints, and also be familiar with code requirements concerning residential homes.
